WHAT IS CREATINE

Creatine is an endogenous amino acid that plays an important role within the cardiovascular, immune, sexual, nervous and musculoskeletal system. There are many different forms of creatine such as Creatine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, Creatine Citrate, Creatine Pyruvate, Creatine Phosphate and the most commonly used Creatine Monohydrate.

Our bodies’ manufacture creatine from the amino acids arginine, glycine and methionine. Creatine is synthesized in the kidneys, pancreas and liver. It is used to help build muscle mass and strength, provide energy for muscle contractions and enhance the recovery time between muscular exertions. The benefits of creatine include increased endurance levels, decreased lactic acid build up and shorter recovery time, making it an effective and popular sports supplement.

The most popular Creatine used in supplementation is creatine monohydrate. As the creatine refuels and regenerates the ATP stores in the body; it produces more energy. Therefore by participating in resistance type training, the body develops lean muscle mass and increased strength and performance.

Creatine is not only beneficial for athletes, bodybuilders, or sports people. It can be significantly helpful for people who suffer with muscle wastage. Due to its ability to increase overall lean muscle mass, creatine supplementation is often implemented by older individuals and people living with diseases that specifically affect the muscles and may help to improve the individuals’ quality of life.

HISTORY OF CREATINE
A French scientist and philosopher Michel-Eugène Chevreul, was the first to discover creatine in 1835. However, a German scientist, Justus von Liebig in 1847 extracted creatine from meat, and claimed that it would enhance the body to work harder; the extract was called "Fleisch Extrakt".
