It has been said that NZ has some of the most amazing timbers in the world, and perhaps nothing demonstrates this more than the NZ Kauri. A tree that's history dates back 190 million yrs, that has been measured at 25 mtrs to the first branch with diameters of nearly 3 mtrs, making it ideal for the huge Maori war canoes to be made in one piece. So durable and attractive is this timber that in the 1820s much of it was exported to Australia and Britain where it was used in everything from brewery vats, church pews, bridges , furniture, etc .
Kauri is not just a unique timber with a beautiful golden sheen. The Kauri Gum was used to make a very high quality varnish, the gas that came off in the distillation process was enough to light the whole factory, The soot from the gum was used in the tattoos of the Maori, then there are the medicinal qualities for relieving Back pain etc.
Today through the art of woodturning, you are brought a sample of this history and uniqueness in a creation that can both be admired and used.
This product is individually hand crafted. The product you purchase will be the same design but the colour and wood grain may vary slightly.
